    What’s workers’ compensation insurance?

    It’s coverage that helps protect your business and employees by paying for medical bills, lost wages and legal fees after work-related injuries and illnesses. See note1

    It’s sometimes called workers’ comp or workman’s comp insurance.

    Am I required to have it?

    In most states, workers’ compensation insurance is required by law for any business with employees.

    Typically, coverage applies to regular W2 employees and 1099 contract workers treated as employees under Labor Department guidelines.

    What does workers’ comp cover?

    Incidents can include falling off a ladder, getting hurt using machinery or developing an illness from the job. And coverage can vary by state. See note2

    Medical Bills

    If an employee gets hurt or sick from the job, it pays for medical bills related to the incident, minus the deductible.

    Lost Wages

    If a work-related injury or illness keeps an employee from working, it helps pay a portion of their lost wages.

    Disability Benefits

    If a work-related injury or illness keeps an employee from work for a longer time, it helps pay for ongoing care.

    Legal Expenses

    If an employee sues your company after a work-related injury or illness, it can help pay for your company’s legal expenses.
